Charlottesville, VA 434-972-9500 118 E. Main Street - Downtown Mall M-Th 10-6, F 10-9, Sa 10-8, Su 12-6 C'ville Arts: A Cooperative Gallery is a vibrant storefront space featuring handmade works by Virginia artists and craftspeople, located one-half block west of the Central Place on the lively pedestrian mall in historic, downtown Charlottesville, Virginia.
The gallery provides Charlottesville residents and visitors with the opportunity to view and purchase art and crafts by about 60 contemporary Virginia artists year-round. C'ville Arts offers a tremendous range of art & crafts, including decorative & functional objects for your home & garden, wearable art such as jewelry and scarves, organic balms, photography, paintings, sculpture, and more. As a cooperative, we work together to operate the store, helping keep our art affordable. Visitors are able to meet and chat with the artists who are on duty each day. C’ville Arts has become a popular place to find unique gifts for all occasions and locally made mementos for visitors to our area.
We feature new work by one of our artist members each month. We host an opening night reception on the first Friday of the month, in conjunction with the First Fridays gallery openings around downtown. |

The Artists Who Came in from the Cold |
A Brief History of C'ville Arts, formerly Transient Crafters
Transient Crafters was born out of a desire to get out of the cold! A group of vendors at the holiday market on the Downtown Mall wanted an alternative to selling their crafts in the cold and wind. The landlord at York Place offered a short-term lease on an empty space. The result was a temporary (transient!) cooperative of 14 artists who opened the doors of Transient Crafters for 3 weeks in December 1997. The next fall, the group found another space, this time at 313 E. Main St. right on the Downtown Mall. By 1999, the cooperative had grown to 20 members and Transient Crafters was open for 7 weeks in a larger York Place location. The success of that holiday season led to the desire to pursue a permanent, year-round store.
