C'ville Arts:
A Cooperative Gallery is the same group of Virginia artists and craftspeople who have been known as Transient Crafters, with a gallery located on the pedestrian mall in historic, downtown Charlottesville, Virginia.

Our cooperative
began with the vision of a handful of craftspeople who sought a seasonal venue from which to sell their art.  In 2000, with our membership growing, we secured our current, permanent location. As the 10-year anniversary of the first seasonal shop approached, we decided it was time for a new name that better reflected our place in the community.

"Creations from my Head and Heart" - Collages by Diane Goodbar

C’ville Arts presents original collages by Diane Goodbar during the month of May with an opening reception Friday, May 2nd, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The exhibit will feature original collages. Each piece of a collage is hand-cut using razor-sharp scissors, then glued together to form the picture. There are no digital or photographic enhancements.  The collages are created much like a jigsaw puzzle, playing with light and shadow, and adding quirky elements of surprise.

The Artists Who Came in from the Cold
A Brief History of  C'ville Arts, formerly Transient Crafters

Transient Crafters was born out of a desire to get out of the cold! A group of vendors at the holiday market on the Downtown Mall wanted an alternative to selling their crafts in the cold and wind. The landlord at York Place offered a short-term lease on an empty space. The result was a temporary (transient!) cooperative of 14 artists who opened the doors of Transient Crafters for 3 weeks in December 1997. The next fall, the group found another space, this time at 313 E. Main St. right on the Downtown Mall. By 1999, the cooperative had grown to 20 members and Transient Crafters was open for 7 weeks in a larger York Place location. The success of that holiday season led to the desire to pursue a permanent, year-round store.
